Low cost and easy spaghetti dinner 2012
Ingredients:
This vegetarian, no meat, low cost spaghetti dinner recipe is nutritious, simple, and delicious. I always plan dinners on a budget -- yet incorporate nutrition and taste -- into my meals. This recipe has no meat, but you can always add meat to suit your taste.
- 1 box of whole wheat (or regular) spaghetti = $1.50
- 1 can of crushed or pureed tomatoes (28 oz) = $1.00 (on sale)
- 1 bag of ready-to-eat salad = $2.00
- 1 loaf of Italian bread = $2.00
- 8oz of fresh mushrooms - $2.00
- 2 cloves of garlic = $.50
TOTAL = $9.00
Steps
Step 1:
- Put water in a large pot to boil.
- Open your can of sauce, put it in a 2 quart pan, turn the burner on medium-low. Add some fresh ground pepper, and other spices as desired.
Note: I typically buy a can of tomatoes without sugar and salt and add my own. This is also healthier than ready to eat spaghetti sauce, and usually cheaper.
Step 2:
- Wash and slice your fresh mushrooms and put in your sauce.
- Peel your garlic, put the garlic in a garlic press, put into your sauce.
- Note: Some people prefer to buy the peeled garlic in jars; however, I prefer fresh garlic. Optionally, garlic powder can be used.
Step 3:
- While your sauce is cooking, and the water is getting ready to boil, open your bag of pre-made salad, put into bowls and into the refrigerator.
Step 4:
- Set the table, stir your sauce.
This low cost spaghetti dinner is fairly quick to make, continually delicious, and consistently a perfect dinner -- with ingredients that you can mix and blend to serve your purpose.

Om Paramapoonya, yeah! You are my first comment on this Hub...and yes, it is simple and easy for busy nights.
I love spaghetti dinners. I mean, it's pretty hard to go wrong with spaghetti. And I like how you kept this recipe vegetarian! It's so true that spaghetti really is a wonderful way to save money on food yet keep it delicious even in a rough economy.

Miss Lil' Atlanta, thanks for stopping by - yes, I should probably add that somewhere in the beginning, good catch!
Hi, Marlo. Your recipe sounds good. Spaghetti is such a heart warming, filling and inexpensive meal. I confess that I often buy a can of Hunts Spaghetti Sauce. It is usually 99 cents for a large can. I buy 2 but sometimes only use one. I like the meat sauce and the four cheese sauce. I used to buy Prego or Classico, but I really like the flavor and the price of the Hunts sauces. I add ground beef and sauteed onion and green pepper. I love mushrooms, but my husband is not a fan.
I totally agree, sundaynews, that Hunts Spaghetti Sauce is inexpensive and will do the trick as well. I support whatever "low cost" option will help support an easy spaghetti dinner. I buy Classico as well when I have a coupon and it goes on sale (I love using coupons), or any sauce for that matter.
Yumm, this sounds so good I have copied the page to my printer to save in my recipe book. I'll try it with a couple of weeks when I go shoppng again.
Multiman, thank you - by using this frugal recipe, you will have more money towards your cable bill! :)
